Success By 6 In Action

Driven by its mission that all children from birth to six in Greater Richmond and Petersburg will be healthy, well-cared for and ready to succeed in school, Success By 6 is focused on improving the quality and accessibility of early care and education for all children both within the home and out of the home.  Together with our partners we are:

  • leading an effective coalition of early childhood programs committed to developing a system for early child development services for all families;
  • increasing the number of quality child care programs;
  • increasing the qualifications and wages of child care staff; 
  • impacting family-friendly business practice; and,
  • raising the awareness of the every day moments for learning families have with children.

Born Learning™
Everyday life is a learning experience for children.  A collaborative campaign of United Way of America, Civitas, the AdCouncil, and Families and Work Institute, Born Learning is a public engagement campaign that helps parents, grandparents, and caregivers explore ways to turn every day moments into fun learning opportunities.  Success By 6 has also tailored the Born Learning campaign to support local employers in enhancing their delivery of family-friendly practice…

Book Bank
Success By 6 manages a Book Bank for the community.  Success By 6 provides management and oversight; the Richmond Public Library provides storage space; local businesses provide books and funding; community service volunteers help sort books; and service providers distribute books to families with children at risk of not reading at grade level...

Quality Rating & Improvement System Initiatives
The STAR and Petersburg Accreditation Assistance projects are pilot quality rating and improvement system, which provide quality assessments, combined with technical and financial supports to existing regulated child care programs committed to increasing the quality of early care and education provided and becoming nationally accredited.  These projects also provide management training for program administrators and Child Development Associate credential training for teachers...
Partnership for Families- Northside
The Partnership for Families- Northside is an entire system of coordinated services for families with the purpose of preparing North Richmond’s youngest children for school.  Through Success By 6 and Memorial Child Guidance Clinic, child care providers in North Richmond are receiving professional development counseling and financial supports for improving their qualifications as early care and education professionals…

Raising A Reader
A research based effective early literacy program that incorporates book sharing and parent-child nurturing with early literacy.  Children receive a different bag of books each week to take home.  Parents view a video and attend an orientation to learn how to share a book with a child regardless of adult literacy levels…
