Women's Leadership Council

Dear Friends:

omen are a powerful force for change!  Nearly three-quarters of women give to non-profit organizations, and seventy percent volunteer at least once a month.  We are leaders, advocates, nurturers and builders.  When we are brought together, there is no limit to what we can do.

Women leadership donors account for more than a million dollars in annual giving to our United Way.  The Women’s Leadership Council at United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg was formed in 2007 to provide recognition for this giving and harness the caring power of women leaders into a focused effort.  Through the Women’s Leadership Council, we will utilize our contacts, our power to advocate and our philanthropy to address critical needs in our community.

Women working together and building a stronger community – that’s what we envision.  Please join us.

Pamela J. Royal, M.D.

Vision and Focus

The Women’s Leadership Council wants to ensure that all our region’s children are prepared to succeed in school and in life.
What we know:
  • Eighty-five percent of the brain’s growth occurs from birth to age five.
  • The brains of children who lack a stimulating environment are 20-30 percent smaller than normal for their age.

  • The foundations for learning are set in the first five years of a child’s life.

  • One out of five children enters kindergarten without the basic skills needed to succeed in school.

  • One dollar invested in early care and education saves the public $8.

Investing in the early years can make all the difference. To this end, we will work to extend the reach of Born Learning®, a public engagement campaign with resources designed to help teach parents, grandparents and child care providers how to turn everyday moments into learning moments.
