United Way at a Glance:

  • United Way has a significant research and community planning function and regularly conducts and collaborates on community needs assessments. This information is used to set priorities for program funding and community problem solving activities.

  • United Way is an expert on human services and shares its expertise and data with regional government, universities, local nonprofits, citizens and others.

  • United Way provides long term funding to programs that are effectively meeting high priority needs. For many of these programs, United Way is the only stable source of funding as their government and foundation grants fluctuate from year to year.

  • United Way uses the following approaches to reach its three community goals of preparing children, stopping homelessness and supporting older adults:
    • Provide funding to a strong portfolio of effective programs working toward each of these goals.
    • Lead community coalitions and projects to tackle larger community-level problems in each area.
    • Provide limited direct service through 211, an information and referral program, that links people in need with available resources in the community.

  • United Way provides a means for every local citizen to participate in charitable giving to support our region.
